Foundations for School Nursing 2023

Format/Location: Virtual Course, with Hub Meetings scheduled throughout the quarter (see dates below)

Course Description

Foundations for School Nursing provides relevant, skills-based education for anyone interested in school nursing or working in schools. The course is taught within a flexible, virtual learning environment, made with busy working people in mind. Participants will also have a variety of opportunities to connect with and build local professional networks.

Foundations for School Nursing provides relevant content for and is open to all pre- and post-licensure healthcare professionals and educators interested in school-based health. The course has been approved by the Professional Education Standards Board (PESB) to meet the course requirement for ESA Certification.

Participants in the program will also receive 30 CNE hours in addition to 30 State Clock hours after completing the program in full.

The University of Washington is the #1 public school of nursing in the United States. The program offered here is the most extensive preparation available in Washington State to ensure your success in the challenging but rewarding specialty of School Nursing. This program is also recognized by the School Nurse Organization of Washington.

Connect with Colleagues

Students will connect virtually in small facilitated groups called Hub meetings throughout the course to synthesize their learning, discuss case studies, ask questions, share expertise, and network with colleagues. Participants will choose between a Wednesday or Thursday group, and you will meet with the same group throughout the course. The meetings will be held on Zoom from 5-6pm on the following dates:

Wednesday Meetings:
– February 15, 2023
– March 1, 2023
– March 15, 2023
– March 29, 2023
– April 12, 2023

OR

Thursday Meetings:
– February 16, 2023
– March 2, 2023
– March 16, 2023
– March 30, 2023
– April 13, 2023

Target Audience

Current and prospective School Nurses, as well as other professionals interested in working in schools.

Learning Objectives

By the conclusion of this program, participants will:

  1. Develop knowledge of pediatric individual- and population-level health issues and interventions
  2. Develop knowledge of managing common pediatric acute and chronic conditions in schools
  3. Build skills and confidence to provide evidence-based care to youth in schools
  4. Learn current approaches to addressing health inequities in the school setting
