CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the most common blood-borne illness in the United States and is the leading cause of liver failure, liver cancer, and liver transplantation. Approximately half of the persons with HCV have never been tested and do not know they are infected.

This conference aims to educate and train healthcare providers in the best practices for screening, diagnosing, managing, and treating liver disease to eliminate viral hepatitis C in our communities. We will explore the nuances of providing care to individuals with liver disease, especially hepatitis C, through an intersectional lens.

TARGET AUDIENCE

For advanced practicing providers (nurse practitioners, physicians, and physician associates) and students, nurse educators, clinical nurse specialists, staff nurses, and other interested healthcare providers in primary care, urgent care, and inpatient settings.

Course Description

Objectives for Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will be better able to:

  1. Understand the epidemiology of HCV in today’s environment to their clinical practice.
  2. Review clinical pearls for HCV treatment & monitoring.
  3. Understand the benefits of and problems with treating Hepatitis C in primary care.
  4. Identify unique work being done in the community to manage and treat hepatitis C.
  5. Review considerations and counseling around social determinants of health in people presenting to primary care for HCV treatment.
  6. Understand how health organization leadership can improve HCV screening and treatment.

Course Description

The Hepatitis C Update 2021 aims to educate and train healthcare providers in the best practices for screening, diagnosing, management, and treatment to work towards eliminating viral hepatitis C in our communities. We will explore the nuances of providing care to this population through an intersectional lens. Hepatitis C Update 2021 builds on knowledge and skills covered during Hepatitis C Update 2020, but the 2020 course is not a required precursor.

Target Audience

Healthcare professionals including staff nurses, clinical nurse leaders, clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, nurse educators, managers, and other interested healthcare providers.

Objectives for Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will be better able to:

  1. Describe the importance of treating HCV among patients who use drugs/alcohol.
  2. Describe patients that should be referred to ID or GI.
  3. Review most common reasons for persistently abnormal liver tests after HCVtreatment.
  4. Be familiar with the current state of post-SVR care.
  5. Recognize cirrhosis on diagnostic testing and physical exam.
  6. Identify what to do when prior regimen and treatment outcome is unknown.
  7. Identify at least 2 risk factors that contribute to virological failure or re-infection.
  8. Identify ways to overcome barriers in treating Hepatitis C in the primary care setting.
