Lisa Abel, DNP, MSN, WHNP-BC, ARNP

Dr. Lisa Abel is Clinical Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing at Seattle University. She is also currently employed as a Nurse Practitioner specializing in reproductive and sexual health in Bellevue, WA. She completed her MSN in May 1989 from University of Rochester and her DNP in March 2016 from UW. Her career and scholarly interests have focused on increasing access to preventive health care services, particularly for marginalized populations, which have included screening for STIs and cervical center screening. Dr. Abel was the primary investigator for a pilot study to screen for cervical cancer at a day center for homeless women through human papillomavirus (HPV) testing from self-collected vaginal samples. Additional scholarship interests for Dr. Abel include applying nursing models and frameworks to implement evidence-based practice to promote clinical practice changes that ensure high quality, efficient, and cost-effective health care.

Target Audience

Advanced practice nurse practitioners, especially adult, geriatric and family nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurses, pharmacists and other interested healthcare professionals.

Objectives for Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be better able to:

  1. Understand updated information related to sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnoses and treatment in clinical settings.
  2. Understand updated medication recommendations for treatment of STIs that have changed since the previous 2015 CDC treatment recommendations.
  3. Describe screening recommendations for early diagnosis and education strategies for decreasing exposure to STIs.
