Speakers

Barak Gaster, MD, FCAP

Dr. Gaster is a Professor of Medicine and primary care provider with expertise in the evaluation and management of dementia. He is the Director of the Cognition in Primary Care Program at the University of Washington where he also serves as the Primary Care Liaison for the UW Memory Brain Wellness Center. A member of the Hastings Center Taskforce on Ethics and Dementia, he is also a member of the Washington Dementia Action Collaborative. The Dementia Directive he helped create has been downloaded over 150,000 times and has been featured in the New York Times and on NPR.

Target Audience

Advanced practice nurse practitioners, especially adult, geriatric and family nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurses, pharmacists and other interested healthcare professionals.

Objectives for Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be better able to:

  1. Set a plan for patients with a new diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment or dementia.
  2. Manage agitation symptoms related to dementia as the disease progresses.
  3. Help patients and families navigate difficult decisions related to goals of care discussions during a dementia illness.
