Module 4: The Challenge of Pain: Promoting Self-Management Strategies

FOR PATIENTS IN CHRONIC PAIN

This module focuses on strategies for discussing the importance of using self-management skills with patients in chronic pain, including key points in patient education, motivational interviewing approaches, and specific responses to common questions. 

OBJECTIVES FOR LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be better able to:

  1. Discuss the importance of using self management skills to optimize the quality of life for patients in chronic pain.
  2. Describe strategies that promote alignment of goals for the patient and clinician.
  3. List key areas to emphasize when educating patients in self management skills.
  4. Provide examples of responses to patient statements that will facilitate alignment of goals.
